Don’t you love it when you find a blog that just inspires you and makes you want to take risks? When we bought our house last year, I was determined to step out of my normal comfort zone and painted our downstairs in Sherwin Williams “Rain Washed”. This was such a huge departure from the usual mossy greens and taupe neutrals I’ve always used in the past. Upon doing this, I discovered that my love for all shades Turquoise has pushed me forward into areas that I wouldn’t have otherwise tried. I have been tremendously inspired by House of Turquoise and was pleasantly surprised to find that I am not alone in my obsession.
I have also been inspired and motivated by the talented and creative Jennifer at The Magic Brush, Inc. Reading her blog constantly reminds me that paint is your best friend because if you don’t get it right the first time, try it again until you get what you want (I mean, how many relationships can you say that about?)…she never takes herself too seriously and she’s a pleasure to read…I highly recommend taking a peak and I DARE you not to come away wanting to throw a drop cloth down and revamp something in your house!
This being said, I’ll update you on my kitchen. We’ve hit minor speed bumps in the form of 1)two back to back weekends of house guests. 2)We started grouting the back splash and discovered that the stainless steel 1×1′s need to be grouted with a silicone based grout otherwise they scratch BADLY, so that’s on the list for this weekend.
3)I began painting the kitchen island and in doing so came to the realization that, like any other muscle, if you don’t use it, you can in fact, lose it.

(three layers of paint later to end up WHITE…again)
(umm….YUCK)
(my attempt at rustic….it actually looks better in the picture, which isn’t saying much)
Thankfully, muscles have memory (or so my old trainer used to tell me) and after spending some time searching for inspiration, I figured I would research my missing painting skills on my little dumpster dive table :
(bef0re: and kind of cute just like this, I think)
(after…excuse the horrible lighting. Blackberry has a ways to go in terms of their cameras…I’m sure it has NOTHING to do with my photo skills)
I’m seriously leaning towards this finish for my island and here’s why:
Jennifer at Magic Brush Inc. did this amazing treatment on a kitchen island for a client and it just speaks to me! She’s amazingly talented, as I said. I think I want to be her when I grow up (don’t tell her she’s younger than me. No one needs to know).
What inspires you? What drives you to try something new?

Thanks so much for such a kind mention!!
I love Jennifer too, her blog is so inspiring. That island she did was amazing….you totally need to do it!
I LOVE the turquoise. You need to go for it! I think the little table looks cool. AND total LOL about your SS tiles…hmmmm…I wonder if those little individual sticky-on things that were such a PITA to remove might have helped had they stayed ON during the grouting process? DANG! AND I found HOT and TMB from your links. Love them both!
I thought the same thing, Melissa, but there's NO way those would have come off the tiles AFTER the grout!
Glad you found the other blogs. TMB is in KC. If you weren't such a fabulous faux painter yourself, I'd say give her a call!
I love that you love the island…. I will totally post a pic…. as soon as I get a good one! I swear my pics are not as good as the real deal on that island. Should I just post so-so pics?????
I giggled cuz I didn't know what “TMB” was…. then realized it is me!!!!!! hahaha
Thanks for the shout out!
Oh I say go for it! I love that island – it's gorgeous & I'm all about turquoise!!
